A beautiful smile can be transformative
Cosmetic dentistry has become a very popular way to transform a persons appearance.
Corrective changes can take years off your appearance, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and fill in sunken cheeks.
Of all procedures carried out to counter the effects of aging, cosmetic dentistry is one of the quickest, least invasive forms of treatment.
Smile design is no longer left to chance. At Melbourne Dentist a range of digital technologies are combined with sound design principles to create stunning outcomes.
By blending science, technology, art, technical expertise and a warm personal approach we attract people of all ages from near and afar.
Watch how we blend art and science to design ideal smiles. This process can be used to address a wide range of aesthetic issues. This process can be used to address a wide range of aesthetic issues.
Problems we regularly solve
Everybody would like to have perfect teeth. Cosmetic Dental services range from simple teeth whitening procedures to complex reconstruction.
Cosmetic problems that people seek advice for include:
There are many reasons why the teeth could become stained and discoloured.
Cosmetic dentistry can address this problem in a variety of ways including whitening procedures, porcelain veneers or crowns or composite veneers.
Old, Discoloured and Broken Fillings
Old worn out fillings can impart significant discoloration to a tooth. This becomes even more evident if there is bacteria leaking around the filling. Corrosion by-products of a silver filling placed near the front of the mouth can leave the tooth bluish or even black in colour. The simple replacement of this material with a new modern tooth coloured material can restore a tooth to its original beauty.
Nothing beats a great smile. Some studies suggest that the smile is the first thing noticed by nearly 50% of people when they meet someone. One of the primary contributors to a beautiful smile is straight teeth. But the self confidence straight teeth will give you is not necessarily their only benefit.
Despite its strength, the outer surface of teeth (enamel) can be worn down to expose the weaker dentine below. This exposed dentine can be sensitive, be more prone to decay and is much more readily worn.
Building teeth back up can involve complex treatment if allowed to get out of hand. Early prevention and restoration is the key.
What makes a smile gummy is a matter of perception but studies have shown that a smile will usually be perceived as gummy when 4 millimetres or more of gum tissue shows.
There are four major causes of a gummy smile, and determining the underlying cause will help us work our way through a myriad of treatment options to find just the right one for you.
A space between two teeth is called a diastema. It is most commonly seen between the two front teeth but can occur between any two teeth. There are a number of reasons why spaces can develop. While orthodontic braces are the most common method used to close spaces, porcelain veneers and crowns can be a quick and beautiful alternative.
Missing teeth in the front of the mouth can really lower your self confidence. Missing teeth at the back of the mouth may not be visible but will often cause a collapse of the bite leading to poor function and overloading of other teeth – including the front teeth.
Solutions to beautify your smile
Cosmetic enhancements can be simple – where a clean-and-polish appointment is followed by a one-hour whitening session.
More complex issues can require a combination of techniques including straightening, whitening, veneers, and gum re-contouring.
The following processes and techniques are used to ensure ultimate aesthetics while maintaining a highly conservative approach.
Digital Smile Design
Digital Smile Design is the modern take on the art of smile transformation.
Blending art and science, high-resolution digital images are used to map your ideal smile based on facial landmarks and your chosen teeth shape, shade and form.
This then enables you to visualise and effectively ‘test-drive’ an individually tailored cosmetic dental ‘mock-up’, before committing to treatment.
At Melbourne Dentist we have many ways to improve your smile including Porcelain veneers, dental crowns and dental implants. However, the easiest and least invasive treatment we offer is teeth whitening, also known as bleaching. The procedure’s simplicity and affordability has made it extremely popular.
To predictably give our patients the smile they desire, we have developed two simple and safe protocols. A few extra steps with newly developed materials have made all the difference.
Porcelain veneers and crowns
Modern ceramic technology allow porcelain veneers and crowns to be made very thin. This allows for incredible conservation of tooth structure while still being able to improve the shape, position, colour and surface lustre of your teeth.
Our digital smile design technique will allow you to see a ‘mock-up’ of your new smile in your mouth. Only once you are completely happy with the proposed changes do we have the laboratory technician utilise the final design for production of the permanent veneers or crowns.
Composite veneers are an alternative to porcelain veneers. They are more cost effective and less invasive than porcelain veneers.
Instead of being produced in a lab from a model of your teeth, composite veneers are produced by placing layers of various shades of tooth coloured resin directly to the tooth surface and then setting or “curing” the resin.
Like porcelain veneers they can dramatically improve a crooked, worn or gappy smile.
A dental bridge is just one of the treatment options that we can use to replace one or more missing teeth.
It’s a more traditional technique that utilises the teeth either side of a space to support a fixed appliance.
While dental implants are the best option these days in most instances, there is definitely still a place for this technique in modern dentistry.
Lost teeth don’t have to stay lost. Dental implants are reliable, safe alternatives for replacing missing teeth that more and more people are using to improve function and appearance.
Tooth coloured fillings
A smile can be transformed simply by replacing old worn silver-black fillings.
One of three techniques is usually employed to replace dental amalgam. The material and technique used is determined by the size of the defect in that exists after removing all old filling material, decay and fractures.
Orthodontics harnesses the bodies own abilities to remodel itself.
Many varied orthodontic treatments allow the dental profession to precisely and accurately move teeth and jaws.
Along with improved aesthetic alignment, facial profiles, breathing difficulties and teeth functional positions can also be improved.
Orthodontics can make an incredible contribution to a great smile and a lifetime of dental health.
Dentistry’s ongoing technological march has also encompassed the world of dentures.
The function, look and feel of a denture doesn’t have to be compromised when manufactured with expert knowledge.
The digital design process can be combined with your own personal take on how you would like your teeth to appear to create premium appliances with ideal aesthetics in mind.
A small number of implants can even be placed in the upper or lower jaw to support an entire full denture with similar sturdiness as natural teeth.
Cosmetic recontouring is a very simple cosmetic dental procedure that is completed in one visit without the need for anaesthetic.
It will produce an immediate visible change to your smile in the least invasive way possible.
Cracks and chips can be smoothed over and minor length adjustments can be made to result in your teeth appearing more symmetrical.
Enamel can even be recontoured to correct minor tooth overlapping.
Gum therapy – Professional teeth cleaning
One of the responses to gum disease, or certain medications is swelling. The healthy pink tissue that usually frames the teeth can become reddened, puffy and may readily bleed. A thorough professional clean of the tooth and root surfaces should reduce gum swelling and return the gums to their former beauty.
The aesthetic balance and harmony of a perfect smile is in no small part related to the shape of the gums that ‘frame’ the teeth.
Just like the biting edges of the teeth, the gum line needs to be uniform.
Differing gum heights will only serve to cause in imbalance in teeth heights.
A simple recontouring of the gums can realign gum levels return a balanced smile.
